Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a well known succulent with emollient properties. It contains amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, proteins, and polysaccharides that are similar to algal polysaccharides. We use it for its healing properties and because it acts synergistically with our preservatives.
Beeswax is a natural wax produced in the bee hive of honey bees of the genus Apis. It is mainly esters of fatty acids and various long-chain alcohols. It is also reputed to have some mild antibacterial properties. We use it as an emulsifier.
Citric acid is found in many citrus fruits: pineapples, gooseberries, limes, plums, lemons, peaches, oranges, and grapefruit. We use it as a preservative and to adjust the pH of AlgalAid to match that of your lips.
Coconut Oil is an oil extracted from the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). While its unprocessed meat is higher in Arginine than Lysine, the oil contains no proteins or either of these amino acids. Just over 50% of coconut oil is the medium chain lauric fatty acid which the body will convert to monolaurins. Other than mother’s milk, monolaurins are found only in coconut oil. They have documented antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
Ethyl Alcohol (Pure Grain) acts as carrying agent and antibacterial agent.
Glycerin is vegetable oil based and formed when fat molecules split. In addition to acting as an emulsifier it works well for moisturizing and smoothing the skin.
Jojoba Seed Extract Mature jojoba plants (Simmondsia chinensis) are woody perennial bushes native to the Sonoran (or Gila) Desert of Arizona, Northern Mexico and arid California. They produce significant quantities of liquid wax esters akin to the esters of human sebaceous glands. Jojoba esters, of high molecular weight, are composed almost entirely of straight-chain acids and alcohols. The acids are a mixture of eicosanoic and docosanoic, with small quantities of palmitoleic and oleic. The alcohols consist of eicosanol and docosanol (the only compound recognized by the US FDA to treat cold sores.)
Menthol (.1 to 1.0% final assay) Mentha arvensis is the primary species of mint used to make natural menthol crystals. This species is primarily grown in the Uttar Pradesh region in India. Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities.
Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is used as a sweetener.
Sodium Benzoate is a food grade preservative used in acidic foods and products to control bacteria, mold, yeasts, and other microbes. It is found naturally in cranberries, prunes, greengage plums, cinnamon, ripe cloves, and apples.
Potassium sorbate is a naturally occurring fatty acid with anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. It is found in the mountain laurel ash (sorbus species) whose dried berries were used as a traditional food preservative. It is derived from naturally occurring unsaturated fatty acids and is a safe and effective food grade preservative.
Rosemary officinalis oleoresin is an FCC (food chemical codex) grade of Rosemary Oil Extract. This antioxidant is used to preserve the oil phase of the AlgalAid cream.
Deionized Water is purified water made by forcing water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane which separates pure water molecules from salts and other impurities.
